The Chrome runtime requires that cookieable scheme information be available
at Profile initialization time because it also triggers NetworkContext creation
at the same time. To make this possible, and to avoid various race conditions
when setting state, the cookieable scheme configuration has been added as
|cookieable_schemes_list| and |cookieable_schemes_exclude_defaults| in
CefSettings and CefBrowserContextSettings. The CefCookieManager::
SetSupportedSchemes and CefBrowserProcessHandler::GetCookieableSchemes methods
are no longer required and have been removed.
This change also modifies chrome to delay OffTheRecordProfileImpl initialization
so that |ChromeBrowserContext::profile_| can be set before
ChromeContentBrowserClientCef::ConfigureNetworkContextParams calls
CefBrowserContext::FromBrowserContext to retrieve the ChromeBrowserContext
and associated cookieable scheme information. Otherwise, the
ChromeBrowserContext will not be matched and the NetworkContext will not be
configured correctly.
The CookieTest suite now passes with the Chrome runtime enabled.
Chrome currently uses chrome_100_percent.pak, chrome_200_percent.pak,
resources.pak and locales/<locale>.pak files. This change adds CEF
resources to those existing pak files and updates the Alloy runtime to
use them instead of the previous CEF-specific pak files (cef.pak,
cef_100_percent.pak, cef_200_percent.pak, cef_extensions.pak,
devtools_resources.pak) which are no longer generated.
The addition of Chrome resources results in an ~16% (~4.1MB) increase in total
combined pak file size vs. the previous CEF-specific pak files. While a size
increase is not ideal for the Alloy runtime, it seems preferable to the
alternative of distributing separate (and partially duplicated) pak files for
each runtime, which would have added ~9.8MB to the total binary distribution
size.
- CefURLRequest::Create is no longer supported in the renderer process
(see https://crbug.com/891872). Use CefFrame::CreateURLRequest instead.
- Mac platform definitions have been changed from `MACOSX` to `MAC`
(see https://crbug.com/1105907) and related CMake macro names have
been updated. The old `OS_MACOSX` define is still set in code and CMake
for backwards compatibility.
- Linux ARM build is currently broken (see https://crbug.com/1123214).
With site-per-process enabled a spare renderer process will be created
for use with a future browser or navigation. Consequently the
|extra_info| parameter populated in OnRenderProcessThreadCreated will no
longer be delivered to OnRenderThreadCreated in the expected renderer
process. To avoid confusion these callbacks have been removed completely.
After this change CefRenderProcessHandler::OnWebKitInitialized should
be used for startup tasks in the render process, and OnBrowserCreated
should be used in the render process to recieve |extra_info| passed from
CefBrowserHost::CreateBrowser or CefLifeSpanHandler::OnBeforePopup.
Running `cefsimple --enable-chrome-runtime` will create and run a
Chrome browser window using the CEF app methods, and call
CefApp::OnContextInitialized as expected. CEF task methods also
work as expected in the main process. No browser-related methods or
callbacks are currently supported for the Chrome window, and the
application will exit when the last Chrome window closes.
The Chrome runtime requires resources.pak, chrome_100_percent.pak
and chrome_200_percent.pak files which were not previously built
with CEF. It shares the existing locales pak files which have been
updated to include additional Chrome-specific strings.
On Linux, the Chrome runtime requires GTK so use_gtk=true must be
specified via GN_DEFINES when building.
This change also refactors the CEF runtime, which can be tested in
the various supported modes by running:
$ cefclient
$ cefclient --multi-threaded-message-loop
$ cefclient --external-message-pump
This attribute is useful for identifying different classes of cast devices
without first requiring a connection (CAST, CAST_AUDIO, CAST_AUDIO_GROUP, etc).
This change also restores the Chromium default values for the
SameSiteByDefaultCookies and CookiesWithoutSameSiteMustBeSecure features. See

timeline.
Chromium supports communication with media devices on the local network via
the Cast and DIAL protocols. This takes two primary forms:
1. Messaging, where strings representing state information are passed between
the client and a dedicated receiver app on the media device. The receiver
app communicates directly with an app-specific backend service to retrieve
and possibly control media playback.
2. Tab/desktop mirroring, where the media contents are streamed directly from
the browser to a generic streaming app on the media device and playback is
controlled by the browser.
This change adds support for device discovery and messaging (but not
mirroring) with functionality exposed via the new CefMediaRouter interface.
To test: Navigate to http://tests/media_router in cefclient and follow the
on-screen instructions.
This change adds a new CefSettings.root_cache_path value that must be either
equal to or a parent directory of all CefSettings.cache_path and
CefRequestContextSettings.cache_path values. The sandbox may block read/write
access from the NetworkService to directories that do not meet this requirement.
To test: Run cefclient with a combination of the following flags:
--cache-path=c:\temp\cache
Cache data should be persisted to the specified directory.
--request-context-per-browser
A separate numbered cache directory should be created underneath the
cache-path directory for each new browser instance.
--enable-network-service --disable-extensions
Same tests, but with NetworkService enabled.
Known issues:
- When NetworkService is enabled a C:\temp\cache\cache\Cache directory is
created (should be C:\temp\cache\Cache).
- Add CefRequestContext::LoadExtension, CefExtension, CefExtensionHandler and
related methods/interfaces.
- Add chrome://extensions-support that lists supported Chrome APIs.
- Add CefBrowserHost::SetAutoResizeEnabled and CefDisplayHandler::OnAutoResize
to support browser resize based on preferred web contents size.
- views: Add support for custom CefMenuButton popups.
- cefclient: Run with `--load-extension=set_page_color` command-line flag for
an extension loading example. Add `--use-views` on Windows and Linux for an
even better example.
- Net security (CT, HSTS) expiration based on build age is now
disabled by default.
- Add new enable_net_security_expiration option to CefSettings and
CefRequestContextSettings.
- Add new CefSettings.external_message_pump option and
CefBrowserProcessHandler::OnScheduleMessagePumpWork() callback.
- Improve documentation related to CefDoMessageLoopWork().
- Pass `--external-message-pump` command-line flag to cefclient or
cef_unittests to test the new mode.
- Add Views header files in a new include/views directory.
- Add initial top-level window (CefWindow), control (CefBrowserView,
CefLabelButton, CefMenuButton, CefPanel, CefScrollView,
CefTextfield) and layout (CefBoxLayout, CefFlowLayout) support.

- Add Views example usage in cefclient and cefsimple and Views unit
tests in cef_unittests. Pass the `--use-views` command-line flag to
cefclient, cefsimple and cef_unittests to run using the Views
framework instead of platform APIs. For cefclient and cefsimple
this will create the browser window and all related functionality
using the Views framework. For cef_unittests this will run all
tests (except OSR tests) in a Views-based browser window. Views-
specific unit tests (`--gtest_filter=Views*`) will be run even if
the the `--use-views` flag is not specified.
- Pass the `--hide-frame` command-line flag to cefclient to demo a
frameless Views-based browser window.
- Pass the `--hide-controls` command-line flag to cefclient to demo a
browser window without top controls. This also works in non-Views
mode.
- Pass the `--enable-high-dpi-support` command-line flag to
cef_unittests on Windows to test high-DPI support on a display
that supports it.
- Add CefImage for reading/writing image file formats.
- Add CefBrowser::DownloadImage() for downloading image URLs as a
CefImage representation. This is primarily for loading favicons.
- Add CefMenuModel::CreateMenuModel() and CefMenuModelDelegate for
creating custom menus. This is primarily for use with
CefMenuButton.
- Add CefBrowser::TryCloseBrowser() helper for closing a browser.
Also improve related documentation in cef_life_span_handler.h.
- Rename cef_page_range_t to cef_range_t. It is now also used by
CefTextfield.
- Remove CefLifeSpanHandler::RunModal() which is never called.
- Add draggable regions example to cefclient.
- Delete include/cef_runnable.h (issue #1336).
- Build the cef_unittests target using all Chromium headers. Add a
USING_CHROMIUM_INCLUDES define and libcef_dll_wrapper_unittests
target to support this. This change avoids compile errors due to
the divergence of CEF and Chromium base/ header implementations.
The libcef_dll_wrapper sources must now compile successfully with
both CEF and Chromium base/ headers (issue #1632).
- The onbeforeunload message specified via JavaScript is no longer
passed to the client (see http://crbug.com/587940).
- Provide access to the full certificate issuer chain (issue #1530)
- Add several missing certificate error codes to cef_errorcode_t (issue #1784)
- Provide the full certificate status bitmask (issue #1790)
POST data includes elements that are not represented (issue #1761).
- Add CefRequest::SetReferrer and CefRequest::GetReferrer[URL|Policy]. The
Referer value will no longer be stored in the header map.
- Move request-related conversion logic to CefRequestImpl and standardize the
implementation.
- Persist modified user preferences including per-host zoom settings when a
cache_path value is specified and persist_user_preferences is set to true
via CefSettings or CefRequestContextSettings.
- Avoid the need to duplicate files from chrome/ by having CefBrowserContext
extend Chrome's Profile class.
- Implement CefRequestHandler::OnBeforeBrowse using NavigationThrottle
instead of ResourceThrottle (see http://crbug.com/537634). The CefRequest
object passed to OnBeforeBrowse will no longer have an associated request
identifier.
- Mac: Remove additional helper apps which are no longer required (see
http://crbug.com/520680)
- Remove the UR_FLAG_REPORT_RAW_HEADERS flag which is no longer supported (see
http://crbug.com/517114)
- Remove the CefBrowserSettings.java parameter. Java is an NPAPI plugin and

- Default plugin loading policy can be specified using the new
`--plugin-policy=[allow|block|detect]` command-line flag.
- Move CefRequestHandler::OnBeforePluginLoad to
CefRequestContextHandler and add a new policy argument that
supports different actions (allow, block, detect, disable) on a
per-plugin-instance basis.
- Add CefContextMenuHandler::RunContextMenu for providing a custom
context menu implementation.
- Add CefResourceBundleHandler::GetDataResourceForScale for
returning scaled resources (issue #1272).
- Add CefResourceBundle for retrieving resources from the resource
bundle (*.pak) files loaded by CEF during startup or via the
CefResourceBundleHandler.

- cef_unittests: Move the refcounting implementation from TestHandler
to subclasses in order to support interface inheritance from
subclasses.
- CefRequestContext instances can be configured using a new CefRequestContextSettings structure passed to CefRequestContext::CreateContext.
- Scheme registration is now per-request-context using new CefRequestContext::RegisterSchemeHandlerFactory and ClearSchemeHandlerFactories methods.
- Cookie managers are now per-request-context by default and can be retrieved using a new CefRequestContext::GetDefaultCookieManager method.
- CefURLRequest::Create now accepts an optional CefRequestContext argument for associating a URL request with a context (browser process only).
- The CefRequestContextHandler associated with a CefRequestContext will not be released until all objects related to that context have been destroyed.
- When the cache path is empty an in-memory cache ("incognito mode") will be used for storage and no data will be persisted to disk.
- Add CefSettings.user_data_path which specifies the location where user data such as spell checking dictionary files will be stored on disk.
- Add asynchronous callbacks for all CefCookieManager methods.
- Add PK_LOCAL_APP_DATA and PK_USER_DATA path keys for retrieving user directories via CefGetPath.
- cefclient: Add "New Window" test that creates a new window unrelated to existing windows. When used in combination with `--request-context-per-browser` the new window will be given a new and isolated request context.

This includes:
- Red underline of misspelled words in html text areas.
- Right-click context menu options to correct the misspelled word.
- New CefBrowser::ReplaceMisspelling method for accepting a word replacement.
- Methods added to CefContextMenuParams for retrieving spelling-related information.
- Uses the unified text checker when auto-correct is not enabled to match Google Chrome behavior.
- On Windows and Linux a hunspell dictionary file will be downloaded to the "<cache_path>/Dictionaries" directory as needed, or used from the <cache_path> directory if the file already exists there. The dictionary file will be downloaded from http://cache.pack.google.com/edgedl/chrome/dict/<LANG>-3-0.bdic where <LANG> is the language abbreviation.
- On OS X the spell checking implementation will use the system NSSpellChecker implementation.
The following command-line flags have been added:
--disable-spell-checking => Disable spell-checking support (no red underline, no dictionary file download, etc).
--enable-spelling-auto-correct => Automatically correct common misspellings while typing (like 'omre' to 'more' on Windows/Linux or 'ehlo' to 'helo' on OS X).
--enable-spelling-service => Enable use of the remote Google spelling service (this requires Google API keys).
--override-spell-check-lang=<LANG> => Use the specified dictionary language <LANG> instead of the language specified in the locales.pak file.
